6 Jun 2008 Johannesburg More than 5000 residents of khutsong township marched to the anc head office, luthuli house. the immigrant communities staying in khutsong joined the march and their flags were flying high. the merafong demarcation Forum (MDF) was protesting against incorporation to north West. the ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe received the memorandum of demands from MDF. the same day the students of khutsong marched the minister of Education in pretoria to raise their concerns and demands. The MDF gave the ANC 10 days to respond to the demands. MDF demanded that the ANC use its majority in parliament to reverse the process of incorporation to north West because there was no proper consultation with the communities. While Gwede Mantashe urged the residents to invite the ANC to khutsong to address the people, they rejected that invitation. they rejected any ANC delegation that will include Thabo Mbeki. the MDF will accept the invitation only after their demands are met.
9 Jul 2008 Cape Town, Durban About 2 500 cosatu workers supported by SACP, ANC and other civil society organisations marched to parliament in Cape Town. In durban buses and taxis were absent, and some shops had to close. protest was against Eskom’s 27% price increase, high food and fuel prices. a memorandum was delivered demanding that workers not pay for government and Eskom failures and poor planning.
23 Jul 2008 Johannesburg, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and North West 10 000s participated in Cosatu marches against high prices. general secretary lashed out at ministers demanding the implementation of ANC Polokwane resolutions. memorandums were handed over Eskom’s office in Braamfontein and Gauteng government office. 1000s of commuters were left stranded, as there were no buses and taxis. most industries were at a standstill. Demands were: No price hikes of electricity and food. no tax on basic food like bread, cooking oil, mielie meal and paraffin.
6 Aug 2008 South Africa Cosatu held a national stay away that was accompanied by marches in all major cities. this protest was against price hikes of electricity, food and fuel. the general secretary of cosatu handed over the petition at parliament in cape town.The marchers demanded the change of economic policy Cosatu demanded: scrapping inflation targeting and 2c/kW electricity levy, the new electricity tariff policy. that the mining industry and other capitalists bare the burden of the electricity costs.Zero rating on foodstuffs, 11% increase in social grants and Extension of grants to include children from 16 to 18 years.
8 Sep 2008 Orange Farm, johannesburg Police arrested 20 residents of orange Farm for public violence when they protested against the lack of service delivery. protesters barricaded roads with burning tyres, rocks, electricity pylons and tree branches. police fired rubber bullets. the busy golden highway was barricaded as the community demanded basic service delivery. T hey demanded roads, houses, water, electricity and sanitation. they also called for ward councillor Meisie Simango to step down. they threatened to boycott next year’s elections and demanded johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo to intervene.
15 Sep 2008 Johannesburg More than 1 000 residents of gatholo heights in mmabatho refused evictions by north West housing corporation. On sunday residents held a night vigil waiting for Red ants security personnel and they vowed to fight back. Six people were injured when police fired rubber bullets. Residents demanded a moratorium on evictions.
15 Sep 2008 Orange Farm, johannesburg Orange Farm residents again protested and barricaded roads burning tyres, electricity pylons and tree branches. police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the protesters. They demanded immediate standard service delivery i.e. roads, houses, water, sanitation, sport facilities and infrastructure
22 Sep 2008 Nelspruit 100s of pupils toyi-toyed at 2010 World cup stadium. the library and fabricated classrooms were torched by pupils as they protested against the eviction from their school. the original school was earmarked for demolition to make space for the stadium’s parking. the police used teargas and rubber bullets to force the pupils away from the stadium. three pupils and three adults were arrested for malicious damage to property. the protest became a daily occurrence. students claim that it is impossible to study in the new pre- fabricated school, due to the heat. Pupils were demanding their original school or a new well-equipped building, made with cement, with proper air conditioning instead of prefabrication buildings.
29 Sep 2008 Soweto, johannesburg 100s of soweto concerned Residents an affiliate of apF, marched to the offices of south africa social services agency in orlando to hand over a memorandum of demands. the march was peaceful and composed of elderly people. They demanded an improvement of the social grants: child support grant from 0 to 18years; and that it be increased to R300.00 per month, old age grants for women to start at 50years and for men at 56yrs at R1 000 per month and hIv/aIds grants at R940 per month, permanently.
2 Oct 2008 Johannesburg Members of police and prisons civil Rights union (POPCRU) marched to the office of mEc of community safety. the marchers comprised of traffic, saps members. they handed the memorandum to the office of the mEc. police commissioner Perumal Naidoo and his provincial team were accused of under-performance. They demanded mEc Firoz cachalia to resign, salary adjustments, immediate implementation of health programmes, and hIv/aIds programmes in all institutions and the implementation of Employment Equity plan.
2 Oct 2008 North West The unrest at north West university has been going on for days. after three weeks of demonstrations at the mafikeng campus students torched senate hall, administration block and a student residence. 49 students were arrested and charged with public violence. damage is estimated at R1-million. the protest was led by sRc-dominated by SASCO. students were given time to prepare a document setting out its grievances. Students among other things demanded the resignation of rector dan kgwadi because he voted for Thabo Mbeki in Polokwane where ANC congress was held. also students were complaining about lack of proper management. Calls were for the dismantling of the institution that came with the merger of Potchefstroom university and university of Bophuthatswana.
14 Oct 2008 Johannesburg Disgruntled residents of soweto, claremont, bella vista, chrisville, vredepark, Eldorado park, Roodepoort and other areas flocked into braamfontein council offices to hand over a memorandum of demands. they said joburg social housing company (joshco) established to provide low-cost housing services was the reason why they had not been afforded ownership of the houses. also joshco’s rentals were too high. Residents demanded ownership of the flats in kliptown. they claimed that their forefathers were paying rents for a long time. Residents also claimed that they signed lease agreements with joshco that ownership of the flats was going to be transferred after a minimum of four years.
