Anele Mdzikwa* reports on the closing plenary session

Delegates jubilantly wrapped up the Khanya College Winter School Skills for Resistance Workshops at the closing plenary session. The delegates seemed very empowered by the workshops and were confident about what they will be taking back to their respective communities. In the plenary, delegates presented brief reports on the workshops they attended and expressed how these skills would be helpful in building and strengthening their organisations and communities.

Comrade Mojalefa from the Sounds of Edutainment (SOE) organisation, expressed his excitement about the writing skills workshop. “I am confident about writing. The workshop has taught us that we can now take a stance to advocate for movements through newsletters and community publications,” he says. Mojalefa adds that by writing articles and telling our stories, they will be able to conscientise themselves and give communities a voice. “When we write, people will be aware of what is happening in the grassroots,” he adds. Winter School Programme Co-ordinator Maria van Driel advised that the workshops would also enhance freedom of expression within our communities.

In wrapping up the plenary session it was clear that the skills workshops were a success. The delegates were also confident that they were developing strategies for movement building in their organisations. The delegates left with one common thought and vision in mind – another world is possible. It is now up to them to pass on the skills they have learned and share with their communities. And as said in the group’s closing quote – “Support Comrades Support!”
