The hosting of the COP17 conference in Durban at the end of this year has focused the minds of the social justice movement in South Africa and the world on the struggle fro climate justice. As an organisation that forms part of the social justice movement, Khanya College had decided to play its part in this struggle. While the conference in Durban is meant to negotiate a new agreement and mechanism on carbon emissions, at Khanya we are firm in belief that climate justice is not negotiable. The struggle against corporate polluters, against governments that support and protect these polluters, and against governments whose sole purpose for coming to Durban is to prevent a global agreement that reverses global warming must be addressed in clear and significant steps. As part of its contribution to the mobilising for COP17, Khanya College has put together a number of spaces and platforms during the Khanya College Winter School for activists and organisations to engage in debate, political education, and the development of strategy for the mobilisation.
Some of these spaces are:
- A special edition of the Khanya Journal to be distributed at the Winter School. This edition will feature debates on the political economy of climate change, and strategies for mobilisation.
- A two day conference of the political economy of climate change. This is part of Khanya Journal’s Winter School conference series titled ‘ The Conference of Radical Political Economy’.
- A one day NGO and CBO Fair. The Fair will focus on the environment, COP17 and social Justice. Various roundtables, seminars, screenings and other activities will be held on the theme of the mobilisation towards COP17.
- A roundtable on climate change and climate justice to be held at the Jozi Book Fair (6-8 August). For details of actual date and times, please visit.
Beyond the Winter School, Khanya College commits to broader mobilisation towards COP17. Khanya College is developing its political position on COP17, and will circulate this to the broader social justice movement for discussion and engagement. Khanya College invites all activists to make use of the spaces at the Winter School!!
