9 June 2009 Johannesburg The Johnanneburg labour Court declares a protest by teachers union Sadtu in Soweto schools illegal. the department obtained an interdict against the union following disruptions at schools in florida, Soweto, Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Ennerdale and its district offices.Sadtu members disrupted classes on monday in Soweto and florida in a bid to have appointment letters signed for their preferred school principals. Some of the teachers have been on strike since last week. Earlier on tuesday Sadtu warned its members that disrupting schools is illegal after they disrupted classes in roodepoort. The teachers were demanding that appointment letters for their preferred school principals be signed.
30 June 2009 mpumalanga – Piet retief Houses belonging to a mayor and three coucillors were torched by angry residents who are “tired by empty promises”. the residents demostrated over the lack of service delivery, nepotism, incomplete roads, selling of rdP houses by councillors and rate hikes. they had submitted a memorandum listing their grievances and were told that the Premier would address them only to be told at a packed stadium that the Premier will not be available. all hell broke loose and the residents torched the local clinic, library, community hall, three trucks and two cars belonging to the mkhondo’s municipality. the house belonging to mkhondo mayor and homes belonging to three councillors were also set alight. 13 July 2009 Diepsloot The community barricaded the r511 with burning tyres, rocks and other debris as it went on a rampage after a meeting addressed by the local councillor. the protest was over a rumoured removal of some to brits, north- West. after the meeting the community began stoning cars, including a police car. Protesters also began to stoning cars on the r511, near lanseria airport, in northwestern gauteng, forcing the Johannesburg’s metro police officers to close the road. 14 July 2009 lydenburg, mashishing Several government and private buildings, including a library, an ambulance, a social security agency office, a shop belonging to the mayor’s brother and a house belonging to her sister, were torched in riots at the lydenburg township. members of the community blocked roads and threw stones at police. the mEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs had to flee from angry stone throwing residents as well following allegations that r3,2 million disappeared from the municipality’s main account. the Executive mayor, Clara ndlovu of thaba Chwe, finally resigned. For the mayor and other senior local government officials to resign and be investigated and charged for fraud and corruption
14 July 2009 Thembisa Angry Phomolong residents in thembisa recently flooded their customer care centre with rubbish in protests against high rates and corruption. the residents, armed with rotten garbage, left the community centre smelling like a rubbish dump after their protest. residents were angered by the high rates they were paying and the victimisation of orphans who had their homes taken away after their parents died. 28 July 2009 Thokoza Police fired rubber bullets at about 200 protesters who stoned police cars and blocked streets, after protesters marched to the Thokoza municipality offices but found it was closed as municipal workers were on strike. Out of anger and frustration the protesters started throwing stones at police cars and blocked streets. the police shot rubber bullets and dispersed the crowd. there were no injuries reported and no arrests made. Delivery of basic services and job creation.
11 September 2009 Vaal Service delivery protests turned ugly when angry rus-ter-vaal residents in the vaal set a clinic and community hall on fire. the residents claimed that they were angered by the Emfuleni local municipality and government’s failure to build them rdP houses. Police had their hands full extinguishing the fire and dispersing the angry residents with rubber bullets. a manager at Emfuleni municipality was also rescued by the police from the angry crowd while attempting to receive a memorandum of demands. 28 September 2009 Standerton, Sakhile Residents of Sakhile township in Standerton protested against poor service delivery and corruption. Schools were disrupted, residents used burning tyres and trash to block the highway (r23 to Standerton) and petrol- bombed municipal property. a month later the mayor and some of her officials were fired. Provision of basic services, the resignation of the lekwa mayor and that the municipality be placed under curatorship because of corrupt officicials
28 September 2009 Balfour About 30 immigrant traders in balfour sought refuge at the nearby police station, fearing for their lives. this was after residents of Siyathemba township had gone on a rampage, looting shops and burning tyres. Provision of basic services
14 October 2009 East rand, Palm ridge Thousands of residents engage in protests after claiming their area has been overlooked for electricity installation. the local ward councillor’s house is petrol-bombed during the service delivery protests. 17 October 2009 Port Elizabeth Residents of missionvale rolihlahla informal settlement in Port-Elizabeth take to the streets, blocking the r75 between uitenhage with burning rubbish. the protesters also stoned cars and police as they demostrated against the lack of service delivery. 22 December 2009 Johannesburg Thousands of faWu ( food and allied Workers union) members embark on a strike in Gauteng and north-West provinces, disrupting the supplies of soft-drinks. 38 workers are arrested for violence and intimidation in midrand abI premises. Workers are demading 9.5% wage increases against the 8.3 offer of ABI
