Marcia Moyana* reports on the women’s activity held during the NGO Fair.
Women and men from various organisations that fight for the rights of women across the country held a seminar during the NGO/CBO Fair. The theme of the seminar was “Violence against women: A constitutionality crisis?” During the seminar speakers were given an opportunity to speak about the work that their organisations were doing about violence against women. They spoke about the challenges they faced as NGOs that fight for women’s rights. Some of the issues raised included women’s continued inequality when it comes to the protection of abused women.
The speakers had one clear, common thought – domestic violence should be considered a CRIME instead of an ACT – as stipulated by the Domestic Violence Act. They also highlighted the importance of providing literacy and education for women. Zubeda Dangor from the Nisaa Institute for Women’s Development noted that the seminar was a success. “People were free to express themselves and the discussion came from different angles”, she said. She also said that the seminar allowed one time to reflect on the work that still needed to be done.
