A safe space for lesbians – August 28, 2011

KC JOURNAL NO 28 August 2011

Mathapelo Skosana* reports on the Forum for the Empowerment of Women.

The Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW) was formed in 2002 and is based in different townships in Gauteng. Anyone or any lesbian women in the community can join. There are four members who work with communities.

The organisation aims to create a tolerant society and a safe space for lesbian women. FEW defends lesbians and helps communities to understand and respect peoples choices. It does this through educational workshops about gender, gender crimes and homophobia.

The organisation faces the challenge of insufficient resources which affects its work in going to different townships to hold workshops. Venues for workshops and refreshments for participants are expensive. Another challenge is the lack of communication and/or working together with the Department of Safety and Security.
